Falls and Seniors: The Importance of Fall Detection & Prevention

A very important issue to be aware of in today’s aging population is the risk of falling in seniors. In fact, according to the CDC 1 of 3 seniors over the age of 65 will fall every year. An even more shocking figure, 20,000 of those falls will unfortunately be fatal. With 2.3 million seniors being hospitalized for fall-related injuries, each year. The average cost of falling in seniors in the United States alone is about $30 billion dollars.

Falls can result in serious injuries for seniors, including fractures and broken bones, and even severely impact one’s mental health. Leading to anxiety and stress over falling and getting hurt again in the future, impacting a senior’s daily life and activities. Many seniors may live alone and therefore it is very important to be aware of ways to mitigate and prevent falls in and out of the home.

What can you do

  • Engage in Light Exercise

Experts suggest that engaging in light exercise every day can help ease the risk of falling in seniors. It is important to consult a doctor first to ensure if and what type of exercise will be helpful. It will allow the body to stay fit, healthy and strong. Helping with balancing and strengthening muscles.

  • Be Aware of Your Medication

Many medications can lead to dizziness, drowsiness, and other side effects that maximize the risk of losing balance and falling. It is important to be aware of these side effects so a senior can behave accordingly and limit any activities that require a lot of movement after taking medication, as it may result in a fall.

  • Edit Your Surroundings

Certain furniture and decor in the home may increase the risk of falling in seniors. This includes items such as loose rugs, unbalanced furniture, slippery floors and other obstacles. Removing these items and making the home more accessible. Adding features like grab bars in bathrooms, and stair chair lifts, will help minimize the risk of falling, and make seniors more comfortable.

  • Invest in Fall Detection Devices

In the event of a fall, it is important to notify a caregiver or loved one so that they may help the senior as soon as possible. Especially if they are injured and have trouble getting help themselves. The Touchless Camera-Free Fall Detection sensor(s) connected to the SenSights Care app would notify caregivers if the fall occurred, so they can provide timely help to the seniors.
